About this game

App language: German.

Baumkreis is a learning game about tree species. Every level is one tree: you spell its German name from a circle of letters. If you know the tree, you solve the level right away. If you don't, you get to know it while puzzling.

Recognise trees instead of just guessing

Hints come as real photos. Each tree has four pictures. The leaf is always free, and you reveal each of the others for a single coin:
• Fruit or flower
• Bark
• Leaf or needle
• Special feature, such as the growth habit

There are also letter hints and a "show family" option that reveals the plant family.

After solving, a fact sheet appears with the Latin name, the family, the native range and all four photos. That way more than just the name sticks.

Structure

• Five levels of familiarity, from "The best known" via "Often seen", "Good to know" and "For explorers" to "For experts": you start with oak, beech, spruce and the like and work your way up to rare species from all over the world. Each level ends with a seal and a reward.
• A topic view with 15 categories, including native broadleaf trees, native conifers, fruit and nut trees, park and street trees, Mediterranean and Orient, tropical fruit and crop trees, and palms. Within a category, related trees are grouped by genus, such as oaks, maples or pines.
• Tree of the day and a weekly path as small daily tasks.
• Genus first: for names like "Schwarz-Erle" you lay "Erle" first, then the species.
• Review: solved trees come back as a picture quiz at growing intervals.
• My forest: what is in bloom or fruit right now, trees that are easy to mix up, and your "seen outside" album.

Content

Baumkreis contains 770 tree species with 3,080 photos. Each species appears exactly once; synonyms and cultivars are not counted twice.

The photos come from Wikimedia Commons under free licences. The authors and licences are credited in the app for every picture.

Good to know

• No account, no ads. Usage statistics and crash reports only with your consent.
• No in-app purchases in this version.
• Photos are loaded from the internet. The trees of the first level also work offline.
• App language: German. Tree names, hints and fact sheets are in German, so a basic knowledge of German is needed.

Baumkreis is for anyone who wants to learn to identify trees: on a walk in the woods, in the park or in their own garden. A word game with a letter circle that teaches botany along the way.

What’s new

437 new trees up to level 5 – now 770, your progress is kept. New: lay the genus first (e.g. "Erle"), then the species. The leaf photo is free for every tree. "Review" quizzes solved trees by picture (up to 10 coins a day). "My forest" shows what is in bloom, look-alike pairs and your "seen outside" album. Android backs up your progress to your Google account. Photo tiles show the whole picture. App language: German.
