Alexander Maclaren (1826–1910) was born in Glasgow, Scotland, the son of a Baptist merchant and lay preacher; he trained for the ministry at Stepney College, London. After twelve years at Portland Chapel, Southampton, he became pastor of Union Chapel, Manchester, in 1858 and remained there for forty-five years, his verse-by-verse exposition drawing hearers from every denomination. In 1905 he presided over the first Baptist World Congress in London and became the first president of the Baptist World Alliance. He wrote almost no books in his lifetime, preferring the spoken sermon, but his printed expositions — collected after his death as Expositions of Holy Scripture — cover nearly the whole Bible and remain a standard of expository preaching.
