About this audiobook

Though they've lived their entire lives less than five blocks from each other, Reuven Malter and Danny Saunders exist in very different worlds. Reuven blends easily into both his secular Jewish faith and his typical American teen life, while Danny's conservative Hasidic clothes and appearance make him stick out in any crowd. Their improbable friendship teaches them that the differences separating people through cultures and generations are never as great as they seem. It is the now-classic story of two fathers and two sons and the pressures on all of them to pursue the religion they share in the way that is best suited to each. And as the boys grow into young men, they discover in the other a lost spiritual brother, and a link to an unexplored world that neither had ever considered before. In effect, they exchange places, and find the peace that neither will ever retreat from again....

Very well done reading, spoken with a story-telling emotion and slight changes in delivery that convey the back and forth between characters. The reader spoke using slight accents to differentiate between people in the book. I had previously only seen the movie that is based on this book. The movie is quite good also. The story portrays various aspects of the drama in life between groups and also between individuals. The story will probably be more meaningful to a person who already has a knowledge of various Jewish communities and observances. Some of the tension in the story dissipates at the end, but in present society the same tensions, misunderstandings, and tribalism can be found. The hopeful aspect of the story is that it shows examples of how people can work to understand, respect, and value others who have a different interpretation and practice for the same faith and religion.
