About this ebook

Complete and unabridged, with 60 full-page plates by George Bellows, John Sloan and William James Glackens. Ferber's short stories, chosen by herself: a manicurist, a traveling saleswoman, a Jewish mother in Chicago, a girl who will not marry the man everyone has picked. She was a reporter at seventeen and won the Pulitzer for So Big; Show Boat, Cimarron and Giant all began as her novels. These are the pieces she wanted kept, and the working women in them were her real subject all along. Sixty plates of city life from Glackens, Sloan and their contemporaries, 1873 to 1927, catch the same streets and working people Ferber wrote.
