About this ebook

On February 12, 2002, at a Pentagon briefing, Donald Rumsfeld split the world into known knowns, known unknowns, and the ones nobody plans for: the unknown unknowns, the things we do not know we do not know. He got mocked for the phrasing. The phrasing was the only honest part. The category was real, and every institution lives inside it.

I have sat across the table from a procurement rule that everyone obeyed and nobody could defend. Not a bad rule, exactly. A rule whose reason had been copied forward across years of jobs until it answered to no living author. We kept arguing the decision the rule produced, quote after quote, tender after tender, and never once asked what assumption was holding the whole thing up. That assumption was the structural unconscious: the premise an institution sees through rather than at.

This book is about those buried premises. Michael Polanyi put it in one line in 1966, that we can know more than we can tell. Thomas Kuhn called the unexamined background that scientists work inside, mostly without noticing, normal science. Berger and Luckmann showed how a habit hardens until it feels as given as the weather. I take their ideas off the shelf and point them at the place I actually work, the bengkel and the quotation and the recurring decision no one will own.

I am not selling a clean method. I am arguing that the most expensive failures come not from bad calls but from premises no one knew they were holding, and that the unquestioned belongs at the top of your suspect list, not the bottom.

A field guide to tacit knowledge, institutional taken-for-granteds, normal science, surfacing an unstated premise, the Five Whys, unknown unknowns, and habitualization, written for the strategist debugging a decision and the organizational reader trying to read an institution for what it never thinks to question.

This book is written from an Indonesian operator's context, but its diagnostics apply broadly to other emerging-market and SME settings.
