Roger Barnes spent fifteen years as a freelance web developer and digital strategist before founding Retain Labs, a consultancy that helps independent professionals transition from project-based to recurring revenue models. His own journey from feast-or-famine freelancer to stable recurring revenue operator took longer than he expected and taught him lessons that no business school covers. After successfully converting his own practice to over ninety percent recurring revenue within eighteen months, he began documenting the process and sharing it with fellow freelancers. That documentation became a series of workshops, then a consulting practice, and finally this book.
Roger has helped over three thousand freelancers, independent consultants, and solo service providers build recurring revenue streams across more than forty disciplines. He has delivered keynotes at Freelance Conference, the Independent Workers Summit, and Creative South, and his writing on pricing, positioning, and recurring revenue has appeared in *Freelancing Magazine*, *The Industry*, and *Creative Boom*. He is also the host of *The Retainerist*, a weekly podcast featuring interviews with freelancers who have successfully transitioned to recurring income models.
When he is not working with freelancers, Roger builds and maintains a small portfolio of niche software products—each one a recurring revenue experiment that he treats as a living case study. He lives in Portland, Oregon with his wife, two children, and an unreasonable number of houseplants. He believes that freelancers deserve financial stability without sacrificing autonomy, and that the best business model is the one that lets you do your best work without wondering where the next check is coming from.
