About this ebook

SYNOPSIS

Consciousness has remained one of the greatest unsolved questions confronting humanity. Philosophy has explored it through reason, religion through revelation, psychology through behaviour, and neuroscience through the study of the brain. Yet none has produced a universally accepted understanding of what consciousness itself is.

This book approaches the subject from a different standpoint.

It begins not with metaphysical assumptions, religious doctrines, or scientific theories, but with the direct fact of experience available to every human being: the three universal states of waking, dreaming, and deep sleep. The central proposition developed throughout this work is that these three states are not separate consciousnesses but different modes through which one undivided consciousness manifests itself through the human system.

The enquiry proceeds systematically. It examines the emergence of personality, the apparent sense of "I", the formation of the unconscious, the operational mechanism of dreaming, the nature of deep sleep, and finally the implications of understanding consciousness as a totality rather than as fragmented psychological events.

The purpose of this book is not to offer another philosophy of consciousness, but to invite the reader into a careful enquiry where observation takes precedence over belief, and understanding replaces speculation.

If, at the end of this journey, the reader begins to perceive consciousness not as an object to be known but as the very ground within which all knowing takes place, then the purpose of this work will have been fulfilled.

Every human being lives through three universal states each day: waking, dreaming, and deep sleep. We move from one to another with such regularity that their occurrence is taken for granted. Yet surprisingly little attention has been given to the profound question they silently raise:

What is it that persists through all three states?

Ordinarily, consciousness is identified with the waking state alone. Dreams are regarded as secondary mental events, while deep sleep is often assumed to be the complete absence of consciousness. This book proposes that such assumptions deserve careful re-examination.

The enquiry undertaken here does not begin with religious belief, metaphysical speculation, or scientific theory. It begins with direct observation. Every reader has immediate access to waking experience, remembers dreams to varying degrees, and awakens each morning from deep sleep. These three universally available conditions provide the foundation for the investigation.

A central distinction runs throughout this work. The human system—comprising the body, brain, nervous system, memory, and psychological organization—is not equated with consciousness itself. Rather, it is examined as the vehicle through which consciousness manifests in different operational modes. From this standpoint, waking, dreaming, and deep sleep are understood not as three separate consciousnesses but as three distinct modes of operation of one undivided consciousness. As the inquiry progresses, it explores the emergence of personality, the formation of the sense of "I," the nature of the unconscious, the operational mechanism of dreaming, and the significance of deep sleep. These investigations gradually reveal that many distinctions we ordinarily accept as fundamental belong to the functioning of the human system rather than to consciousness itself.

The title The Totality of Consciousness reflects this central insight. Human experience ordinarily reveals only a localized and conditioned expression of consciousness. The enquiry seeks to understand how that limited expression relates to the larger totality from which it arises.

The aim of this book is not to persuade the reader to adopt a new belief. Its purpose is to encourage careful observation and independent enquiry. If the investigation succeeds, the reader may discover that consciousness is not something to be attained or acquired. It is the ever-present reality within which every thought, perception, dream, memory, and even the apparent absence of experience arises and subsides.
