About the Author
Vanrite Sue is an award-winning speculative fiction author and a creative writing instructor with over two decades of experience. Her novels, including *Echoes in the Neural Net* and *The Last Bootstrap*, have been praised for their deeply human portrayals of artificial intelligence and their unflinching exploration of what it means to be conscious. She holds an MFA in Creative Writing from the University of Southern California and has completed advanced coursework in artificial intelligence ethics at the Stanford Center for Internet and Society.
Before becoming a full-time writer, Vanrite spent ten years as a software engineer specializing in natural language processing and human-computer interaction. That technical background infuses her fiction with authenticity, and she has since dedicated herself to bridging the gap between technology and storytelling. She teaches workshops on character creation for science fiction at writers’ conferences worldwide, including Worldcon, the Writers’ League of Texas, and the GrubStreet Creative Writing Center.
Vanrite’s short fiction has appeared in *Clarkesworld*, *Lightspeed*, and *Asimov’s Science Fiction*, and she has been a finalist for the Nebula Award and the Theodore Sturgeon Memorial Award. Her non-fiction articles on writing craft have been featured in *Writer’s Digest* and *The Writer* magazine. She is also the host of “The Character Engine,” a podcast that interviews game designers, novelists, and AI researchers about building believable minds.
She lives in Portland, Oregon, with her partner and a collection of vintage computers that she insists are just “research tools.” When not writing, she volunteers with a local robotics club, teaching teenagers how to program neural networks and, occasionally, how to give their robots a bit of personality. Vanrite believes that the stories we tell about AI today will shape the world we build tomorrow—and she is committed to helping writers tell those stories with nuance, empathy, and technical rigor.
