About this ebook

A seal, a bearing, and a pump each failed within the window the wear curve had predicted, and the only people surprised were the ones who had treated the schedule as a rumour rather than a timetable. I have lived that scene in pump service and on the fabrication floor, and I keep meeting operators who insist the breakdown came out of nowhere.

It almost never comes out of nowhere. Reliability engineers have a plain picture for this: the failure-rate curve runs high but falling early in an asset's life, flat and low through its useful middle, then rising through the wear-out tail. Mean time between failures turns that shape into a number you can plan against. None of it is exotic. It is the timetable your equipment, your team, and your arrangements are already running on, whether or not you read it.

I wrote this because I spent years denying that timetable myself, deferring a service until the deferral met its predicted failure on time, then paying the most expensive version of the bill. The cheapest intervention almost always lives in the slow phase nobody touches, because nothing has visibly broken yet. Have you ever called a failure a surprise when, looking back, the curve had been climbing for months?

This is a short, jargon-light account of reliability engineering, the bathtub failure-rate curve, mean time between failures, deferred maintenance, and predictable degradation, written for the operator who would rather read the decay schedule than be ambushed by it.

This book is written from an Indonesian operator's context, but its diagnostics apply broadly to other emerging-market and SME settings.
