About this ebook

R. A. Torrey was an influential Christian evangelist, pastor, Bible teacher, and author whose ministry emphasized the authority of Scripture, prayer, evangelism, and practical obedience. He repeatedly urged believers to know what the Bible teaches, trust in Christ, and make their daily conduct consistent with their profession of faith.

Known for such works as How to Pray, What the Bible Teaches, and The Person and Work of the Holy Spirit, Torrey sought to equip Christians to understand biblical truth and communicate it clearly. His earnest concern for Christian faithfulness continues to challenge believers to examine their priorities, convictions, and behavior in the light of Scripture.

THIS IS NOT A REPRINT OF R. A. TORREY’S ORIGINAL BOOK.

More than a century has passed since Torrey wrote Christian Living. His insistence that biblical faith must shape everyday life remains relevant, while believers today face pressures and circumstances that require careful application of the Scriptures.

This edition is a 21st-century update of Torrey’s call to practical Christian faithfulness. I have preserved his emphasis on biblical conviction and obedience while substantially rewriting and expanding the material for readers living today. The fourteen chapters address resisting cultural compromise without becoming bitter, guarding the mind online, raising children with firm biblical convictions, and maintaining integrity at work. They examine church disappointment, greed and contentment, honest evangelism, repairing troubled marriages, anxiety intensified by constant news, and loneliness despite digital connection. Further chapters consider responding when a teenager abandons the faith, enduring ridicule, maintaining regular Scripture study amid demanding schedules, and preparing for persecution through present obedience.

Where necessary, Torrey’s theological language and interpretations have been revised to conform more closely to the historical-grammatical meaning of Scripture. Christian direction comes through the Spirit-inspired written Word rather than mystical impressions or private revelations. Throughout these chapters, biblical teaching supplies the standard for evaluating beliefs, addressing problems, and choosing faithful action.

My prayer is that this updated edition will help Christians bring their everyday lives into agreement with God’s Word, strengthen their trust in Christ, fulfill their responsibilities with integrity, and continue faithfully along the path leading to eternal life.
