Sir Basil Henry Liddell Hart (1895–1970) was a British soldier, military historian, and theorist whose influential ideas shaped modern warfare. A veteran of WWI, he championed the "indirect approach"—a doctrine advocating maneuver over frontal assault. After WWII, Hart conducted extensive interviews with captured German generals, resulting in The Other Side of the Hill (UK 1948; US as The German Generals Talk), a revealing insider account that helped redefine Allied perceptions of German military leadership. Known as "the Captain who teaches Generals," his blend of scholarly analysis and strategic insight influenced post-war military thought and continues to inform studies of leadership, ethics, and operational art.
