Thomas Bulfinch (1796-1867) was an American writer and banker whose retellings made classical and medieval mythology accessible to a broad English-speaking readership. His three major mythological works were The Age of Fable, The Age of Chivalry, and Legends of Charlemagne, later gathered as Bulfinch’s Mythology. Writing in a clear nineteenth-century prose style, Bulfinch connected stories from Greece and Rome, Arthurian tradition, and the Charlemagne romances with the poetry and art they inspired. His books became enduring reference points for readers encountering Western myth and legend.
